Notes from the Pastor

'Tis the month of our Mother, the blessed and beautiful days.  True devotion to Mary always leads to Christ.  There is a beautiful hymn entitled "She will show us the Promised One".  In the scriptures, Mary's final words were these:  "Do whatever He tells you".  Mary is the model of discipleship.  All of us are weak disciples, often more like Peter on Holy Thursday night rather than Mary who stood faithfully and lovingly with Christ on Calvary.

You may have noticed a new credence table in the sanctuary.  In every minute detail it matches the wood and style of our altars.  It is a very worthy and noble piece of furniture to hold the chalices, water and wine and the candles used in procession at Mass.  Come take a close look at it, located between the main altar and the pulpit.  It is the handiwork of our own parishioner Tim Sprosty.  May God reward him.

The BAA has begun and I appeal to every family in all three parishes to make a contribution.  This helps the diocese and in many ways it comes back after the target is met, to each parish.   If all three parishes exceed their goal by a million dollars, we'll all go on an ocean cruise.  If we don't get that much, we'll just fix a few things as needed.  Aim for the cruise!

We're getting closer to the Ordination of our three new priests and the first Mass of our deacon, Timothy Lynch.  The cost of training seminarians for the priesthood is very expensive.  The diocese covers the lion's share of the cost, so when you support the Bishop's Annual Appeal you are helping to train our seminarians.

This Sunday children will make their First Communion at 9:00 a.m. at St. Mary and at 5:30 p.m. at St. Ladislas.  What a day of grace this always is.  Renew in your own heart you commitment to Christ in the Holy Eucharist.  More plans are under way to establish adoration at St. Mary. Watch for the sign-up when it is announced.

The Lord be with you!

Fr. Kevin Lutz

From the Cat at 684 S. Third Street:

It is good to be loved.  As a cat I am automatically loved by means of my catness.  That love is further evidenced by the cards and treats and gifts I receive around the year.  Recently, a Secret Admirer of mine gave me three silver dishes.  I overheard him say that if anyone identified him as the gift giver, he would deny it.  See how modest and good he is.  These gifts came on no particular occasion.  After all it is not my birthday, it's not my name day, it's not National Give Glory to Cats Day-- So what is the occasion?  Just to be nice!!  So here is a suggestion for you: buy an unexpected gift to cheer someone up.  Write a letter that will lift someone's spirits.  You might also consider writing a thank you note that is long overdue.  It might also be a good idea to write an apology for an old wound that is still festering in some way.

Volume II of my contribution to the shelf of Great Books in Literature of Western Civilization is at the printers and will soon be available at church vestibules near you! The cost is $20 which will go to help St. Mary School.  For Volume I a few people paid extra so that free copies could be given to sweet ladies who have not too many coins of the realm at their disposal.  Remember that dear old lady is somebody's mother!  Be her secret Book Benefactor and help the school as well.

Editorially yours,

(Hoping to be in Reader's Digest before the curtain comes down)
