Notes from the Pastor

In your charity, please pray for the soul of Theresa Haley who was buried from St. Mary this past Thursday.  Also, pray for the soul of Dr. Joseph Patrick O'Rourke who was buried last Tuesday.  Dr. O'Rourke has been a generous benefactor to the Holy Family Soup Kitchen and the Jubilee Museum.  Please pray for the father of Father Matthew Hoover and the father of Father Martin Ralko who died recently.  May their souls rest in peace.

Lent has begun.  It's always a time of resolution -- more so than January 1st.  It's always better to make reasonable and small resolutions rather than to make a fantastic list and break everything on it.  Shut out all distractions -- it is a time to pray, give alms and fast.  I'm sure no one has reached perfection in any of those categories.  I'm far from it myself.  An easy addition to your Lenten schedule is daily Mass.  Among the three churches there is a wide variety of times.  I will look for you in the front right row.

Great news for St. Mary--- Mike Montler was a 1961 graduate of St. Mary High School.  St. Mary School has received a Golden Football in honor of Mr. Montler who was a player in Super Bowl XII (1978) when he played for the Denver Broncos.  Mr. Montler also played for the Boston/New England Patriots, the Buffalo Bills, and the Detroit Lions.  His professional football career extended over 1969-1978. Mr. Montler also proudly served our country as a United States Marine from 1961 to 1965.  God bless all those who defend our freedoms as Americans. And to Mr. Montler -- Semper Fi!

The Lord be with you!

Father Kevin F. Lutz

From the Cat at 684 South Third Street:

I am writing my column on Ash Wednesday.  I heard Father Droll greet me and in a very nice voice this morning.  I must be his Lenten penance.

I'm certainly doing my own penance; winter came late, but with a vengeance.  I don't like this cold at all!  I look forward to the days ahead when the windows are open and there is no snow outside.  My only entertainment on snowy days is watching the pastor tripping down the sacristy stairs and trying to look graceful on the ice.  It's a great advantage to have four legs.

Never listen to groundhogs.  Talk about design flaws:  those teeth!!

In all the sacraments, Christ gives to us the transforming power of his love, which we call “grace.” But in the Eucharist, and only in the Eucharist, Jesus gives us even more. He gives us his entire self—Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. Of course, the proper response to a gift of this magnitude is gratitude.
