Notes from the Pastor

In your charity please pray for the soul of Frank X. Shirtzinger, 83.  He was the son of the late Frances Shirtzinger (organist at old St. Peter's and Our Lady of Peace) and has many surviving relatives here in the city. Also, please remember the soul of Millicent McClelland.  May they rest in peace.  Millicent McClelland is the grandmother of Kaitlyn whose wedding will take place here at St. Mary on February 6th.

I just returned from Mother Angeline Manor where I saw Leo Thurn.  I gave him strict orders to get better.  It is amazing how his presence enlivens St. Mary.  I also saw Beverly Durthaler.  She is on the mend, but needs prayers to endure the PT so that she can walk again.  Such great souls!

February is Black History Month.  This is a special month to pray for the canonization of Father Augustine Tolten.  He was a slave in the South during the Civil War as a child and his mother, fearing that children were often taken, stolen or given away, escaped to Illinois.  Eventually, her son grew up and felt the call to the priesthood.  There are several books and articles about this very courageous priest.  May he soon be added to the Calendar of Saints in Glory.

Tuesday is often remembered as Candlemas Day---also known as the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.  Some may remember it as the Feast of the Purification of Our Lady.  And as if that’s not enough, it is also World Day for Consecrated Life.  This would be a good day to send Sister Wilma, all the Sisters at St. Leo and also our Dominican Sisters here in the school a card or greeting in celebration of this day.  May they each be blessed in their vocation.

Lent is not far away.  February 10th is Ash Wednesday.

I will be traveling with Father Hinterschied for a few days of spiritual retreat.  I will remember you in my Masses and prayers and ask that you keep me in yours as well.  (Just received a call that I am on the waiting list for the retreat.  So . . .I may be here after all.  It's all in the hands of God.)

The Lord be with you!

Father Kevin F. Lutz

From the Cat at 684 S. Third Street:

My new book has just undergone proofreading.  It will be available soon.  All proceeds go to St. Mary School.  You know you need it.

Although I'm a little too old to go out and play, I watch from the windows and hear the laughter of the children and even the announcements from the office.  I have just calculated that I am older than every child in the school and younger than everyone on the staff.

I was a middle cat (so I've heard) so it's nice to be in the middle of the teeter-totter of the school.  Then on the other hand, if I use my special cat-years calculation, I'm older than everyone in the parish - 126 years old.

My energy is lowest in January.  Wish I had energy to write a little more----maybe next week.
