From the Pastor’s Desk….…

In mid-August, Bianca DeMaria (loveliest name I have ever heard after the Holy Names), our organist, completed three years at St. Mary and took a position at St. Cecelia on the west side.  Our new organist, beginning on September 1, is Bill Antoniak. Bill will cover the Saturday 4:00 and Sunday 9:00 Masses.  Those interested in singing in the 9:00 choir, please introduce yourself and join again. The balcony is open.

Tim Lynch will be back at the seminary before you read this.  He spent a good bit of his summer in Spain walking the Camino.  It is a powerful experience to walk 500 miles to the shrine of St. James.  Many people seeking a closer encounter with God will make one of these historic pilgrimages.  Tim also spent part of his summer here assisting in the parish.  God reward him as he returns to his studies.

This has been a busy week for sick calls, including one from a non-Catholic lady who wanted the Last Rites. You ask; you receive.  She had been baptized and spontaneously asked for a priest.  What are the odds that I got a call one block from the hospital as this was happening?  A nurse remembered my number and soon I was able to pray with her.  You don't need a priest to get into Heaven; you need Jesus.  But the blessing of a priest is very powerful gift at the last moment of life.

Please pray for Karen Bauer (Mt Carmel), Frank Wickham, Roseann Hanson (Grant) and Nancy Baumann (Ross Heart Hospital).  All are making progress and are in need of your prayers.

RCIA is about to start. If you know someone who wants to become Catholic, invite them to attend.  If you are a Catholic and need a refresher course, come and join the gang each Wednesday evening in the Burkley Center.

The Lord be with you!

Fr. Kevin F. Lutz

From the cat at 684 South Third . . .

How are you all?  I have been busy helping the last seminarian get out the door.  I have to be nice to these guys.  One of them could come back in the future as the next pastor.  Don't make enemies, I always say.  They are good but they do not understand my language as well as Father Lutz does, but then I have had years to train him.

There is a wise oak out back.  I was looking at it after looking at the picture of Msgr. Burkley in the rectory.  I understand they were friends and grew up here together.  As I have studied the history of St. Mary (I, too, am getting ready for the sesquicentennial), I have a great awareness of old things (no, I am not making a joke about Father Lutz), just an observation of how important is the faith that has been handed on.  It's not just an anniversary.  It's the handing on of your Catholic mind and memory.  The old oak and I are new friends.  I will share with you the wisdom of the oak in future columns.

HELPFUL HINTS

Do you have a Will? Wills do not cause death! Don’t be afraid to write one. Sign it, date it and ask two people to witness it. Consult a lawyer. Otherwise some strange distant relative will auction your treasures on eBay.

Consider remembering Saint Mary in your will as well.

HOLIDAY OFFICE HOURS…the parish office will be closed on Monday, September 1st for the Labor Day Holiday. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Heavenly Father, we might be shocked if your Son came back today and attracted people who live differently from the way we live. Give me the grace to be accepting of all whom you have created in love. Help me to love the way Jesus loves so I can treat people with love and kindness. I ask this in Jesus's name. Amen.-from Stories of Jesus
