From the Pastor’s Desk….…

"Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him."  For 15 of his 64 years as a priest, Father Ralph Huntzinger served St. Mary and is still a bright memory in the lives of many who worship here.  Father died last Wednesday, July 30th, having served in countless ministries over those decades.  He was ordained when I was five months old in my mother's womb.  His service as a priest encompasses my entire life, and then some.  Father was very involved with the seminary, priestly formation and spiritual direction.  Father's mortal remains will be brought to the church on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.  Viewing will continue until 7:00 p.m. when Deacon Roger Minner will lead a Prayer Vigil for his soul.  Viewing will resume around 9:30 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial offered by Bishop Campbell Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the Priests' section of St. Joseph Cemetery.

We will never know the impact of the life of anyone, and especially a priest, until we all arrive at the Final Judgement.  I am sure there will be a good crowd who will thank God for the life of Father Ralph:  for the countless souls he baptized, heard the confessions of, gave communion to, and united in Matrimony.  Even that list can't grasp his help to the poor and his spiritual direction for many good people.  His last words, spoken very slowly to Sister Noreen, were repeated three times, "Thank you!"  I am sure those words had thousands of intended recipients:  those who attended him at the end, especially Sister Noreen, as well as the thousands of people to whom he ministered, and who ministered to him.  I'd like to think that those words were also addressed to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  He was united from the day of his baptism to the Trinity, but most perfectly on the day of his priestly ordination, March 18, 1950.  Now the earthly journey is ended.  May God who created him, recreated him and who made him a priest forever, grant him a prophet's reward.  I hope that he will pray before the throne of God for this church he loved so well. Requiescat in pace.

There will be lunch provided in the school gymnasium following Father’s funeral Mass.

Please pray also for Matt Felice, only in his 40s who also died this week.  Matt's mother and many devoted souls kept vigil with him. Ask Our Lord to give peace to their grieving souls to lose one so young.  His funeral:  Saturday, August 1, at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Church celebrated by Father Black.

The St. Mary Homecoming festival will be next Friday and Saturday.  Father Ralph attended at least 15 of them, probably more.  I know Father loved a good party.  See you there and let's share some of the memories of St. Mary's fifth pastor.

Welcome to special guests this weekend:  the Seniors of Bishop Hartley High, Class of 1979, are celebrating their 35th reunion. Every weekend there seems to be another reunion.  What a blessing to welcome you all!

On August 3rd I will have been here one year!  Time has passed very quickly.  It has been a good year.  I thank you for your kindness.  You are in my prayers; I hope I am in yours, as well.

The Lord be with you!

Father Kevin Lutz

St. Mary's 10th pastor

From the Cat at 684 South Third Street . . .

I am looking forward to the annual festival like the annual trip to the vet.  I get shut in my room, so that I don't escape from the rectory.  If you wish to see me, you'll have to talk to Father. Otherwise look for the upstairs window on the south side with the double window fan.  I'll be there with Frannie X.  Oh, the indignity of a window fan, as if we were anything less than the most fragrant roses in the garden.
