SOUTH SIDE COMMUNITY MINISTRIES

Looking for a great way to volunteer to help those in need? Have just a few hours each month to help those less fortunate? We are looking for volunteers from Saint Mary to help with the South Side Community Ministries (SSCM) Food Pantry located at St. Paul’s UCC (255 E. Gates St) on the south side of ColumbusSt. Mary was one of the 6 founding members and the parishioners have continued to help guide, operate and support the pantry for over 30 years.

Volunteers are needed for the Saturday that falls on the last full week of each month. The shift is from 12:30 – 2:30. There are various projects and tasks where help is needed. These task include stocking shelves, customers service, help with truck unloading (we get over 10,000 pounds of food at one time) which usually falls early Wednesday morning. There is also the need for someone to travel 1 (one) time a month to pick up fresh and retail items at the Mid-Ohio Food Pantry. This occurs the last full week of the month.

If you are interested in volunteering or would like to learn more about the pantry please contact: Sandra Thompson at 614-917-3008, san020306@gmail.com or Dawn Deaterla at ddeaterla@yahoo.com.

FORTNIGH for FREEDOM

The U.S. Catholic Bishops have called for a second Fortnight for Freedom, a two week period of prayer and action, to address many current challenges to religious liberty, including the August 1, 2013, deadline for religious organizations to comply with the HHS mandate; Supreme Court rulings that could redefine marriage, and religious liberty concerns in areas such as immigration and humanitarian services. The Fortnight will take place from June 21 (the vigil of the feasts of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher) to July 4 (Independence Day).

For more information, contact the diocesan Office for Social Concerns at (614) 241-2540. For the latest updates, prayer resources, educational materials, and action alerts, visit the Office for Social Concerns’ website at www.socialconcerns.colsdioc.org.

The Perfect Prayer
The Lord's Prayer is the most perfect of prayers.... In it we ask, not only for all the things we can rightly desire, but also in the sequence that they should be desired. This prayer not only teaches us to ask for things, but also in what order we should desire them.

—St. Thomas Aquinas
