Financial Report Part Two: Last week, Father Thomas reported that we may experience a $26,000 surplus this year to use on much needed repairs this spring. Our fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. The parish has a debt of $437,000. It is owed to the diocese at an interest rate of 4.5%. We paid $20,000 in interest last year. The parish has restricted endowments totaling $408,000. Last year, these endowments returned $19,800 to the parish to use in specific areas determined by the original donors (for example, tuition aid to needy students, or assistance to seminarians of the parish). The endowments had a return of 8.73%, but 3.73% was re-deposited to help the funds grow. The parish has one significant savings account for the school building repairs/improvements totaling $127,000. This money was set aside after the Partners For the Future campaign was launched years ago. Please watch this bulletin for further reports on finances and proposed repairs.

St. Mary’s will host “Bully-Proofing Youth – Parent Edition Tuesday, February 13th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the school gym. Parents will learn what dynamics create bully and victim behaviors and how to help their children not become or remain a member of either group. The focus will be on practical things parents can do at home to support their children, including the technique of role playing exercises with kids, the goal being able to stop the cycle. Presenter: Jim Bisenius.

Sign up for, or re-subscribe to The Catholic Times, the newspaper of our diocese this week. An envelope for this is in your packet or just use a plain envelope marked The Catholic Times.

The new season of Theology and a Pub will begin on Thursday, February 22 with "Lectio Divina: Reading and Praying Over the Word of God" by Dr. Leo Madden. On many occasions since his election, Pope Benedict XVI has encouraged the reading of the Bible according to the traditional method known as Lectio Divina. Join us in February to find out: what is this method, how does it work, and how can I promote it in my own life and in the life of my parish? Doors open at 6:30 and the talk begins at 7pm at the Columbus Maennerchor, 966 South High Street in German Village. Admission is just $2, and the full Maennerchor food and drink menu will be available for purchase! For more information on this talk and the spring season, the Bible on TAP, visit our website at www.theologyandapub.org.

Help deliver groceries to poor families. Every Saturday morning bags of groceries are packed and loaded for delivery behind J.O.I.N. across from the Cathedral. Drivers are assigned routes. Directions are given. If you don’t want to deliver you can just help pack bags. Call C-C at 595-9970 with questions.

Help Saint Mary School earn a few extra dollars and help to save the planet at the same time! The big green and yellow bin on our parking lot holds all of our recycled paper; every month, we receive a check (averaging about $90.00) for the paper we have in our bin. Many German Village residents use our bin and we invite our parish families to recycle all their household newspapers, junk mail, and magazines, too. The more paper recycled, the more we earn-- and we’ve saved a tree or two, as well.

From now until March 31, Abitibi Recycling is offering a special recycling promotion: If we can increase our paper recycling by 25%, they will send us a check for $250; if we increase our recycling by 50%, we’ll receive a check for $500! Please save up your household paper and drop it in the recycling bin and make sure this bulletin is recycled, too! No cardboard please.
