From the Pastor

Dear parishioners,

There are a couple of important events in our near future which I would like to call to your attention. First, in Advent, we will have a parish mission – actually, a vicariate mission, since we are doing this in conjunction with Corpus Christi and St. Ladislas parishes. Fr. Thomas Sullivan of the Fathers of Mercy will be the presenter. There will be a presentation each evening from Sunday, December 4th through Wednesday, December 7th, and we will then close the mission with Mass on Thursday evening, December 8th (feast of the Immaculate Conception) at 7:00 PM.

From time to time, it is important for us to more deeply examine our faith, and a mission provides us with an excellent opportunity to do so.  Among the topics that Fr. Thomas will address are: the Most Blessed Sacrament, the Virgin Mary, the Mercy of God, the Ten Commandments, and the Angels and Saints. I hope that everyone will plan to attend, and I ask that everyone in the parish begin now to pray for the success of our mission.

Another event in the future which is important for us is the Winter Gala which is scheduled for January 14th. This promises to be an evening of great fun, dining and dancing! Please make plans to attend this new fundraiser for our school. To sign up for this event, you can download reservation forms from the St. Mary Gala website, gala@stmarygv.com.

Finally, I want to remind everyone that we now have an Electronic Contributions Option (ECO), for those who wish to support the parish in this way.  Anyone who has questions about this is encouraged to call Nancy Auer at the parish office for more information.

I pray for the Lord’s continued blessing to be with all of you and your families!

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Hammond

St. Mary of the Assumption Church and School will sponsor a Winter Gala Dinner and Auction at the Hyatt Regency Columbus from 6:00 to 10:00 PM on Saturday evening, January 14th. This event will benefit St. Mary’s Catholic School. Our Winter Gala Dinner and Auction will enable us to establish an endowment which will help sustain a 140 year legacy of learning. We pray that you will support this important cause with your attendance, your contribution or your donation of auction items.

Youth Group OSU -Michigan “Tailgate” Party! Come and bring your favorite “tailgate” foods and beverages Saturday November 19th at 11:00 AM to the Burkley Center Atrium. We will party and watch the game on a big screen TV. All age groups are invited!! For more information contact Johnny LaMotte at 469-0899.

The St. Mary’s Christmas tree sale will begin November 26th! Help is needed to stake the trees on November 25th. If you are able to help with this project please call the rectory office at 445-9668.

  This week’s focus:   Service

The altar server occupies a privileged place in the liturgical celebration. He who serves at Mass, presents himself to a community. He experiences firsthand that Jesus Christ is present and active in every liturgical act. Jesus is present when the community comes together to pray and render praise to God. Jesus is present in the Word of sacred Scripture. Jesus is present above all in the Eucharist under the signs of bread and wine. He acts through the priest who, in the person of Christ, celebrates the holy Mass and administers the sacraments.

Therefore, in the liturgy, you are much more than simple "helpers of the parish priest." Above all, you are servers of Jesus Christ, of the eternal High Priest. Thus, you, altar servers, are called in particular to be young friends of Jesus. Be determined to go deeper and to cultivate this friendship with him. You will discover that in Jesus you have found a true friend for life.
