FROM THE PASTOR

Dear parishioners,

A big thank you to all for your prayers for my safe travels!  I had a nice visit with Fr. Steve Baumbusch, my friend working in the Philippines.  The people there are really inspiring, as they have a deep faith and joy in the Lord in spite of the fact that many of them are quite poor materially.  Please keep Fr. Baumbusch and all missionaries in your prayers, as they are doing a work which is vital to the Church and its people.

At this time of year, we are really gearing up for the Homecoming and Festival on August 12th and 13th.  We are always in need of more volunteers to help our festival run smoothly, so please sign up to help if you can.  It can truly be a lot of fun – no kidding!

As you know, the Festival always takes place the weekend before the feast day of our parish – the feast of the Assumption, which is August 15th.  This year it falls on a Monday, so while it is a holy day, it is not a day of obligation this year.  But since it is our feast, I would like to invite everyone to plan to attend Mass at 7:00 PM that day, followed by a procession in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary through the streets of German Village.  I hope you will join us to honor our patroness and to celebrate our feast day.

Please note that at all the Masses next weekend, Monsignor Paul Langsfeld, the Rector of the Pontifical College Josephinum, will be here to make an appeal at all of the Masses.  This will actually be our “mission appeal” for this year.  As you know, one of our deacons, Dr. Michael Ross, is the Academic Dean for the Josephinum.  In addition, over the years since I’ve been here, we have had many deacons (such as Deacon Tony Steinacker, who will return to us in the fall) and seminarians from the Josephinum who have helped us in many ways here at St. Mary’s.  So as a parish we have a very strong connection with this special place of priestly formation, and I know I can count on your generosity next weekend for this appeal.

I continue to pray that the Lord’s blessing will be with all of you and your families.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Hammond
